CHRIST RETURNS TO JUDGE EACH ONE OF US

If you have been taught that being a Christian when Jesus returns you are going to receive a reward and everything will be great from then on you may want to study the Bible further. Matthew 7:21 – 23 – “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.”

Have you not been taught: all you have to do to become a Christian and go to heaven is accept Christ as your Lord and you will be saved? My intent is not to frighten anyone but to point out that much is expected. Christianity is not just about making a commitment and then living life the same as you may have always lived as the world lives. It requires repentance, a change in one’s heart and attitude, a lifetime of service and living by the teachings that Christ came to share what God’s Will was for each of us. If you believe that we can set our own standards to live by you have not studied your Bible.

Revelation 20:11 – 15 – “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

II Corinthians 5:10 – “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”

It talks about books. Most know that if your name is not in the “Book of Life” you will be thrown into the lake of fire at the time of judgment. There is a second book called the “Book of Deeds”. Scripture says your deeds are being kept tract of and there is continual writing taking place. As we are being judged the “Book of Deeds” will be opened. Every one whose name is in the Book of Life will receive their just reward from out of the Book of Deeds. We know that works will not save us but it indicates our relationship with Jesus Christ. We will be rewarded by how we handled our gifts, opportunities, responsibilities and were we accountable to God’s standards and rules?

If you believe that God’s gracious gift of salvation frees us from faithful service and obedience we may be mistaken. We must live each day realizing that what we say and do is being eternally recorded. Rev. 20:13b says: “each person was judged according to what he had done.”

We all have different temperaments and personalities. Some have gifts of preaching, teaching and healing. Many of us do not have these gifts. We will not be judged on something we do not have. If our background and temperament leaves us shy, fearful with little confidence we will be judged on what we have. God is loving and just. He expects nothing more than our best. Not all of us are seven feet tall and capable of being a professional basketball player. I would assume that our relationship with Christ and a humble, servant’s heart will get us adequate rewards. What Christ requires of me is probably different from what He will require of you. However, if you know, (and you can) that the Holy Spirit is in you, God promises us that our name is in the “Book of Life” and there is a recorder going on keeping an account of our actions. Not to condemn us but to reward us. When Christ told us our sins would be forgiven, those are deleted from the recording. I believe that just the good we do as Christians is what will be played at the Day of Judgment. If Christ recognizes us as one of His family we will hear nothing but the good. Let’s make sure that there are not an extreme number of deletions, of our sins, from that recorder.

Our battles in life can be overcome.

We are told we have a mind and soul that are influenced by our flesh or by our spirit. If we are mostly allowing the Holy Spirit to direct our thinking we can usually live a less sinful life. However, when we permit our flesh to direct our actions we probably would live more like the world. If we should live as the world lives we might encounter problems from a negative perspective and become either overly discouraged or depressed. It would be more likely that we try to solve our problems by ourselves rather than trusting God to meet our needs.

A number of years ago a very devote Christian lady we know was encountering some problems in her life. She became very depressed. She allowed her depression to become an escape from her problems. Rather than trusting God to meet her need, she became involved in an affair. She then developed a guilt complex that she couldn’t seem to get over. She was sharing the situation with my wife and how it had affected her life. Instead of overcoming her depression it became worse and caused anger and loneliness. Of course, she allowed her flesh to make her decisions.

I heard a story how doctors believed that the mind, under certain circumstances, can cause one’s body to heal on its own. They had two patients who needed knee operations. For the first patient they did what they normally would do in order to surgically fix the problem. The second they made three minor punctures and stated they had used a new procedure. They both were wrapped equally and afterwards both were treated the same. Two years later they both had no knee problems and x-rays indicated both had healed. Surgery healed one and the mind or a miracle healed the other.

My wife was having tremendous pain with a foot. X-rays indicated the need for surgery. A nurse told her to take a tennis ball and roll the bottom of her foot back and forth on the ball. She did this constantly for days. She has had no problem with pain in her foot for the past two years.

We make choices every day. When problems come and they always will, do we ask: “God why aren’t you meeting my need?” Or, do we say: “God, I know you are with me. Please help me make the right decisions and get through this situation?” How can God build our faith and trust unless we see Him getting us through the valleys of life? The greater our knowledge that we acquire through Bible study the more wisdom God gives to us. Our relationship to God and our trust factor can be a very positive effect on our minds and bodies. We are told stress is probably harder on our bodies than anything else. Why would the Bible tell us not to worry? Disappointment and depression is normally caused by fleshly thinking and results in stress that can be damaging to our health.

Our spirits and minds have tremendous influences over our bodies and our well-being. Would you rather have your mind controlled by the flesh or by your spirit and the Holy Spirit? Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Do we not believe that God is in control and can change things? When problems come do they control us or do we, through Christ, control them? Therefore, we must stop conforming to the pattern of this world and have a mind that daily is being transformed and renewed to have the mind of Christ. Once we are developing the mind of Christ there is no longer a need to become depressed. Maybe disappointed or frustrated but only temporarily.

Making an IMPACT to IMPRESS upon a person the need to change

I had been asked to write two blogs a week by a potential publisher. My first reaction was I didn’t think I can do it. I have now posted 140 and have seen Google pick some up and have had readers throughout America. Each week I wonder what should be in next week’s blog. I am amazed how it just happens! If I want to get additional readers I write about prophecy. However, this creates a lot of controversy. In fact, I have been told they would rather I write about something else. I don’t want to get too involved in politics. I know I could write fifty blogs on congress and the administration. Anyway…Thanks for participating and thanks for the comments.

This past Sunday Dr. Charles Stanley brought a message on the importance, as Christians, of having an impact on others. I hope that my blogs, whether you agree or disagree, may have had some impact on what you think about Christ and Scripture. An impact is making a sudden and powerful effect that impresses someone to change their thoughts, actions and direction. Have you allowed the Holy Spirit to make a true impact on your life?

This morning I read an article in the newspaper about how the outside world sees us as Christians. “We may not realize it but some Christians come off as cold, harsh or merely ineffective to outsiders or that specific parts of a worship service can rub at least some newcomers the wrong way.” According to Dr. Stanley there is a tremendous difference between trying to impress someone than making an impact. The difference being, we may be trying to make ourselves look good rather than making a difference in another’s life. How can we impact another with how we live or by what we say for them to accept Christ as their Savior?

I have run into some who have been Christians for years yet, who seem to put the world first in almost everything they do. Have you ever worked for a Christian who took advantage of customers, employees and others? Do you know Christians you could never trust? The impact they usually make is negative. Yet, they seem to believe they are living a holy life. How do others see us?

Romans 8:5 – 6 – “Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;”

As Christians there is a continual war that goes on between the desires of the flesh and the guidance of our spirit. How we live is based on which nature is the most persuasive. If our carnal, self-centered nature continues to guide us we may have little impact on those we are close to. We have been given the Holy Spirit to help us have the self-control to overcome those fleshly desires. Too many Christians, it seems, ignores the Spirit that is within us trying to give us proper guidance.

To a great extent the Holy Spirit is there to free us from the desires of our carnal nature. If we don’t have peace, joy and freedom then we are relying on our own strengths and not trusting God to meet our needs. It may take some believers a long time before they learn to develop the trust that is needed to be at peace. Our past baggage, before receiving the Holy Spirit, must be forgotten. We must accept God’s forgiveness or we will not become rid of our past guilt. Our past baggage, if we allow, can defeat us. Ephesians 4:23 & 24 – “to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” These verses tell us to get rid of deceitful desires and develop a new self; otherwise the devil may continually tempt us. We must take a completely different direction in our lives with a new way of thinking and acting. How important is money, prestige, impressing others? Is it more important than living a spiritual life that will impact other? Have we forgotten the Golden Rule to treat others as we would want to be treated? If you were to rate yourself on selfishness or being self-centered how would you grade yourself? Is this an area that needs improving?

Scripture tells us that when we receive the Holy Spirit, the Spirit will take our dead and insensitive spirit and give it life. Our spirit becomes immortal and this is clearly proof that God has accepted us into His family. Once we become more spiritually mature we will not try impressing others with who we are or what we have accumulated. We then can live a life that can impact the lives of others as we have been impacted by those who were followers of Christ. Otherwise, we may be one of those many Christians who turn other people off by not walking the walk.

Do We Make Salvation Too Easy?

We have two deferring theological beliefs. Can you lose your salvation or once saved, you will always be saved. These two beliefs are probably the most contested disagreements and can separate Christians and cause division in the church. Another may be: is it necessary to speak in tongues when receiving the Holy Spirit?

Could we be misleading people when we state that if they will say this prayer: I accept Jesus Christ as Lord, I ask for forgiveness, repent of my sins and I invite the Holy Spirit into my life? It doesn’t take much more than that but is everyone who says these words saved? Let us look at the following parable.

Mark 4:15 – 20 – “Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.”

It is my belief that in three of the above illustrations in the above parable, if they received salvation, they lost it. I base that on a number of different Scriptures, especially: James 4:14 & 17 – “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

Matthew 7:21 – “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

April, approximately 900 went up to the front of our church and confessed that they had received salvation. Were they all saved and did they receive the Holy Spirit? Only God knows! Of the four options in the above parable the first quickly lost it or never received salvation. The person who received salvation with joy, when trouble came they gave up. The third may have been living a Christian life for years when lust and temptation came along, they gave up their salvation. The last group was Christ followers to the end. Some believe once saved they may do most anything and still be saved. I believe this is going to the edge and is really questionable.

Matthew 7:21 tells me it isn’t so much about what I believe but how I live. I have mentioned previously that one of the greatest gifts I have received is contentment. Christ gives to me everything I need. Philippians 4:13 – “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” We must learn to be pleased with what God has allowed us to have. We must not allow what we do not have to be something that we must have. We must not envy what others have that we don’t. We must be careful to give God thanks for everything we have. This does not preclude us from having nice things, a good job, home, cars and others items. However, contentment means these material things are not must haves! I always remember the man given the five talents who made ten and his master said, good and faithful servant. To the man given one talent and buried it made the master angry. He took talent and gave it to the man who had made ten. Contentment does not mean laziness! We must do our very best in every endeavor and material things are only byproducts of our labor.

In the parable of the seed and soils I do not believe the first three ever found salvation or if they did, they gave it up to live as the world lives. The fourth grew and produced through obedience and doing God’s will and was the only one to find contentment in Christ. Now you be the judge. Did everyone in the parable find salvation and are all going to heaven?

Can greed and envy destroy the world as we know it?

We can see America changing and continue to wonder where it will end. There are a number of risks that we now must take into consideration. There is excess leverage, government deficits, higher taxes coming, money instability and new regulations. There is potential for inflation, rising oil and gas prices and costs resulting from the oil spill off the Louisiana coast. European country’s debt crisis could become a global threat. You may be wondering why a small European country, Greece, is affecting the U.S. stock market. It is more than just Greece. If they can’t save Greece there are other countries that could default. If the plan to keep the PIIGS, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain from defaulting does not work it could tremendously affect the U.S., Asia and Latin America. It could even lead to another recession or an economic double dip. This is one of Wall Street’s major concerns. Should they default or have problems borrowing, U.S. and U.K. banks could be seriously hurt. There is a slight possibility that it could cause the fifteen nation euro zone to become undone which could affect the world financially. It is with these questions in mind that we look to and plan for the future. The problems with Europe are their government guarantees for socialized health care, retirement benefits and high wages for government employees. America could be headed for similar problems. The direction many nations are following could put the world into a major financial crisis. If politicians had spines this could all be fixed. However, when you see rioting in Greek’s streets because people are unwilling to submit to a lowering of their standard of living you can see why it is not easy to change. I am waiting to see what will happen in California if they don’t get bailed out. We are getting a similar view with government employees in Clark County unwilling to renegotiate their contracts. If the world is headed for a potential crisis what could be the outcome?

What has caused the world to get into this financial mess? Revelation 12:9b – “that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”

What we are watching throughout the world is the committing of the seven deadly sins. Pride produces all of the other sins. Then there is gluttony: the desire to consume more than one requires. Two more are lust and anger. Then there is sloth or the avoidance to work or improve oneself. The two I want to discuss is how satanic forces have caused greed and envy to affect our entire world. First, let me refer to the blog: “Satan’s attack on the Catholic Church”. It is estimated that Catholic priests have performed 100,000s of exorcisms on those possessed with evil spirits. Many of those possessed may have been in leadership positions. How many successful people have we tried to emulate what they may have done to become wealthy? Can you describe their character? Do they practice honesty, integrity, fairness and service to others? Or, are they willing to do whatever to achieve success?

Have we gone too far in pursuing wealth, fame, power and instant gratification? How much is excessive? Is there ever enough for many? One of the seven deadly sins that corrupt many is greed. If we do not want to be greedy and sinful then let’s call it a different name. We can call it being overly ambitious or extremely competitive making the sky our limit. Therefore, we must determine if we are working with the right motives and many have not been. How many of us are greedy enough that we would do almost anything for money, power or fame? Would you estimate 75% of the population? Has the world been allowing Satan and his millions of fallen angels and demons influence and set people’s goals? How susceptible are we to temptation?

Let us assume we are given a raise from $75,000 to $100,000. We go home and tell our spouses how pleased we are and how much the company appreciates us. We are celebrating, excited and very pleased until we find out that another employee we work with was raised to $125,000. Now we are angry! We become envious. Envy can be worse than greed. Envy may cause more athletes, actors, CEOs and others to demand excessive pay than greed. Envy has probably caused more wars than any other reason. Envy may cause more problems in the church and between churches than other factors.

If you are listening to the evening news or reading the daily paper can you not see what is happening in our world today? Politicians, unions, different political doctrines, executives and I could continue on putting themselves before everyone else. How capable is the world of reverting back to a less standard of living if it becomes necessary? This is what happened after the great depression of the 1930s. How many are willing to give up something to benefit others? What happened to love your neighbor or do unto others as you would do unto them? Greed and envy can cause picketing, riots and revolts. What will keep all of this from occurring? History tells us that this will take God’s intervention. When will God intervene? Scripture says only after thousands upon thousands of Christians pray for God to become involved. Want to know the rest of the story? Study Revelation! Did you know everyone has an Internal Guidance System?

I happened to turn on the radio and heard a lady talking about the benefits of having an IGS. I am thinking is this something like you put in your car and it gives you directions. She goes on to tell that it is kind of like having “gut feelings” or sensing something is about to happen before it happens. I have had a number of times feelings that I should do or not do something and it has saved my life or it caused large financial losses. As I keep listening I am wondering if she is talking about one’s conscience”. Or, maybe she is talking about our spirit. She continues to tell a number of stories how a person, using their IGS was able to do things that were very unusual. In most cases it was life saving, financial rewards or improved life-time experiences. Since having missed most of the program I go to my computer and look up Internal Guidance System and this is what I learn:

“The Internal Guidance System or “IGS” is a reliable, sensory based “secondary operating system” – an alternative to being controlled by our mind, our ego and thought patterns, a personal life compass and a trusted companion that can help us attune to divine guidance, be in alignment with our higher purpose and act in the world from a place of personal power, courage and integrity.” Wow! I knew I had a personal life compass but I thought it was the Holy Spirit. Before receiving the Holy Spirit I realized that there was something within that helped me know right from wrong. There were times I had those gut feelings. I just didn’t realize it was called an internal guidance system or a personal life compass.

I was unable to determine if this was a new age religion or a person making a living selling books and giving seminars. I have been outlining I & II Timothy and Titus for my Bible study group and the apostle Paul tells Timothy and the Church at Ephesus to be aware of false teachers. But many of us are very gullible. Scripture says in the last days many believers will become deceived.

I have had opportunities to buy land or invest in companies that had I done so would have made me wealthy. My research and my gut told me not to do so. Others did and became multi-millionaires. What was wrong with my internal guidance system? Did their IGS just work better than mine? Just think, if I had made the right decisions I would not be doing what I am now doing. I would no longer be in business investing for clients and I would not be writing this blog. Chances are I would be visiting different countries and finding new ways of being entertained.

If God planned out my life I wonder why He chose the course that I have followed. If I had made different choices would it have given me more faith, joy and peace than I now have? Maybe if I had taken that seminar and used the IGS rather than the Holy Spirit for guidance I would be much more financially well-off. Well sometimes in life there are times we have to make decisions. Who are we willing to let control our lives: the Holy Spirit or that Internal Guidance System that can make us richer and give us personal power, courage and integrity? Maybe it might be best to use the IGS if you want to live as the world lives. However, if eternity, forever and ever is important, you probably ought to be obedient to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and chose God’s will. You be the judge!

Jeremiah 29:11 – 13 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

The importance of FAITH, PEACE and JOY in HEALTH and LIFE

For most of twenty years as an elder I have had the opportunity to pray for those who have needed prayer for healing. James 5:14 – 16 – “Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”

I have struggled with the meaning that says: “And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.” Not everyone, I or others have prayed for, are healed and some have passed away. One question I have always wondered about is how important is faith in healing? Research tells us that fear can actually kill. We have heard of people dying of shock resulting from an accident. Can fear cancel out faith?

Mark 6:5 – 6 – (Jesus) “He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their lack of faith.” Mark 10:52 – “Go’, said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.”

I have written about this previously. However, Scripture that says “faith will make the sick person well” keeps me struggling for an explanation. Each week some of us receive a prayer list from our church asking that we pray for the sick. How many actually are healed? Why did some receive healing and others seemed not to? Was it because of a lack of faith on the people praying or the person asking for healing? You may have heard me say faith does not heal you; it takes the power of the Holy Spirit. But it takes faith on the part of the sick person to be healed and stressful-fear must be overcome. How about the person in a comma? They may not be aware that there is anyone praying for them. Then are the prayers of those praying for healing dependent upon the prayer’s faith?

In the 9th chapter of Mark a father asks the apostles to rid his son of an evil spirit and they couldn’t. When Jesus arrived He was frustrated at the apostles for not having enough faith. The father asked Jesus to rid the demon if He could. Mark 9:23 & 24 – “’If you can’? said Jesus: ‘Everything is possible for him who believes.’” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” The apostles asked Jesus why they couldn’t handle the demon. Jesus indicates that prayer was the key that unlocks and reveals faith. Effective prayer needs both an attitude of complete dependence and reliance on God.

Jesus then sent out His disciples with instructions to heal the sick. I don’t think the disciples prayed: “God if it is your will heal this sick person.” It is like saying: “God if you don’t want to heal this person you really don’t have to.” I still believe that God, in His way, answers every prayer of a faithful believer. He may not do it in the way we expect or in the time we want. But His love for us tells me He will do whatever is best for us. Many may not believe going to heaven can be God’s answer to prayer when we are praying for healing. Yet, it may be what is best but only God knows. Some people have been terrified of being sick and God took away their fear. That was His answer to prayer. It was then possible that they healed according to nature’s normal way or as a result of medical treatment. That I believe was God’s answer to the many who prayed for me. If our church had elders that miraculously healed the sick every time they were asked we would have a congregation of many, many thousands. People would come because of the healing more than to hear the gospel. This is what attracted most to Jesus, His healing and His miracles.

One thing I can attest to when going through a life and death situation is that the Holy Spirit can give you continual peace. John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Worldly peace usually means a lack of conflict. Christ’s peace is confidence that the Holy Spirit will comfort and guide us through any circumstance. There is no reason for our hearts to be troubled or should we be afraid.

For the past 26 years I have had a heart problem. I have had bypass surgery twice and angiogram procedures twice with stenches inserted. My cardiologist is amazed that I am alive. Through it all I have learned that faith can remove all fear. This has made me question how important is one’s faith and can fear block out faith? Fear can be a lack of faith and trust in God’s healing power as we learn in Scripture. When the doctor tells your family your heart is not strong enough for you to live and tells you your organs have just shut down and your color is as yellow as a lemon, knowing that you are in God’s hands can give you complete peace and joy knowing God cares. Thank God no matter what I have gone through, problems or in health, I have always felt the peace that only the Holy Spirit can provide. Were it not for answered prayers, faith and a deep peace and God’s healing hand I would not be writing to you.

Now let’s address the importance of faith and peace in life. Going through the deepest recession since the 1930s many have become scared, frustrated and to a degree hopeless. Ask them if they have any peace in their lives and the answer is unequivocally no and their stress is horrible. As a financial advisor with over 500 clients seeing their investment portfolios go down month after month was very disconcerting. Yes it is very disturbing. However, this is a time when we must completely put our trust in God that He will meet our needs. I had the same peace that was there when I was going through my physical problem. It was the same peace I believe Paul talks about having. I assume it comes from having knowledge of the Bible and believing in God’s promises. It may require reaching a certain spiritual maturity that allows complete trust and being totally dependent upon God. It is a peace that I believe every Christian can have. However, I believe it takes time to reach that trust factor with God before His peace overcomes all stress and hopelessness. Seek it out!

P.S. Each week as I receive the church’s prayer list, my heart aches for those who are going through some very serious situations. It reminds me of the story of the man who was complaining because he had no shoes until he saw another with no feet. We often just take for granted that life is to be one big bowl of cherries. However, many of us have been blessed, in general, with good health and few problems. Let us remember those unfortunate and the stress they are going through in our prayers and thank God for His blessings that we still have feet.

Are we preparing for Jesus’ return?

You have probably heard it said: What we think about eternity will determine how we live today. The Old Testament prophets predicted the first arrival of the Messiah. Everything they foretold came to pass to fulfill God’s plan. This is why I believe what the Bible teaches about Christ’s second return will be exactly as predicted.

We are told that heaven is a temporary holding place for the souls of believers until Jesus returns. After 1000 years on this earth with Christ, we will be transported to a new heaven and a new earth that is indescribable and beautiful. There we will live with God and Christ as the angels have lived for ever.

Matthew 24:4 – 25 warns us to let no one deceive us. We will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Nation will rise against nation. There will be famines and earthquakes. We will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death. We will be hated by all nations because of our belief in Christ. There will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now and will never be equaled again. There will be false prophets. They will perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the strongest and most faithful Christians. II Peter 3:17 – “Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.”

I Thessalonians 4:16 – 18 – “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.” (This has been called the rapture.) I Corinthians 15:52 – “For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” (We are told we will have an imperishable body, will become immortal and will have the mind of Christ.”) 1 John 3.2b – “But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”

Revelation 21:1 – 4 – “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’”

God says He is making everything new. Those who are victorious will inherit all these blessings and He will be their God and we will be His children. Those who do not accept Christ as their Savior will spend eternity separated from God.

As we read on there are far greater promises. I don’t know about you but there is nothing I would trade here on this earth for the promises of the future and life after death. How much are we willing to sacrifice in order to live a pure and holy life? How important is it to live as the world lives if it means missing heaven? Is living a disciplined life, saved, totally surrendered, having repented and committed to Christ worth forever and ever?

Do you feel unworthy? You must understand the meaning of grace.

I Timothy 1:12 – 17 – “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.”

Paul was chosen by Christ to take the gospel to the Gentiles and much of the New Testament tells of his past. He was the worst of sinners. He says we should look at him and see how desperate he was. He then praises God and says if He can save me, empower and strengthen me, then by His grace He can and will do it for anyone.

Scripture says that Paul did not exaggerate his past. He approved the stoning of Stephen. His purpose, prior to being converted, an ultimate goal was to destroy Christianity and the church. He went from home to home dragging people off to prison. He yelled murderous threats to the Lord’s disciples. He was a huge part of the Jewish persecution of Christians. The Jews put some to death and others were placed into prisons. He did whatever he could to oppose the followers of Christ.

Regardless of everything that Paul said and did, once saved, God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit gave him the love for both believers and unbelievers. What Paul lacked God supplied. What He did for Paul He can and will do for each one of us because of His grace. As we know, grace is a gift and cannot be earned. Yet, many believers struggle with grace, which is given through Jesus Christ, believing that they must work and earn their way to heaven. Too often we set ourselves personal standards that we cannot reach or the church or church people do it for us. Frustrated and discouraged we feel like failures and unworthy to be children of God.

How does one become convinced we are forgiven and accept God’s grace? We must thoroughly understand the meaning of “grace” because it is major in comprehending what the New Testament is based upon and how God is different from the Old Testament. It may take reaching a certain spiritual maturity. But once we fathom the meaning of grace and can accept it, then Christ wants to show His unlimited patience in our lives. We then can become examples to others. So we may need to stop trying to make certain changes in our lives, which many cannot do and totally die out to our self-centered nature and let the Holy Spirit make those changes for us. But that can only be done by faith in Christ that God truly loves us regardless of our past, present or future. However, our part is to become obedient and accountable to the teaching of the Gospel. If we do not know what the Gospel teaches it makes it most difficult to feel accepted by God and feel worthy. We do not earn being worthy. We are made worthy by God through His Spirit. It is His gift and it is “free” to us. Do you have the faith to accept it?

There are three things that can make us feel worthy: faith, love and hope. First, faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ. To have faith requires certain facts. The Gospel is a simple message that God asks us to believe. The world continuously looks at a Christian to see how they treat other people and family. The Gospel repeatedly states that we are to love our brothers and if we have hate in our hearts we will not have eternal life with Christ. Lastly, hope is believing in the future and our lives in heaven and beyond. Why have love for Jesus Christ if there is no hope. Possibly it is the “hope” we have for eternal life that motivates us to have “faith” to accept and the “love” that comes from being transformed by the Holy Spirit.

It is the acceptance of God’s grace that forgives our sins. It is faith, love and hope that helps us understand that through Christ we are judged worthy to become God’s children. It is the devil who tries to defeat us through promoting negative thinking that we are just not worthy and God’s grace won’t change that! It is the Holy Spirit who is trying to convince us otherwise. To whom should we listen?

One Year Anniversary – 102nd Blog

Ministers may preach 100 sermons annually for over 40 years. I asked my family if I should continue blogging and they suggested I continue. So we will go on. My goal was to blog twice a week or 102 blogs in a year. Over this past year there have been approximately 5,000 hits or about 95 per week. One year ago, I could not have imagined that I would be writing the following blog.

Being an investment advisor since 1987 I have had a glimpse of what creates needs in most people. If I were to ask 100 people what their main need was, I probably would get 85% to respond that it was financial. If you were to ask any city, state or our government what their greatest need was, they would have to say finances. If I were to ask: “Where do you think Satan might attack most individuals to bring us down”? The answer might be financial.

If I were to ask why are you having financial problems? Many would reply: “I do not make enough”. The real answer is: “I spend more than I make”. We see a number who have come from foreign countries, where they had hardly anything, within years they became financially independent. Their needs are much less than the needs of most Americans. Therefore, they are more inclined to save and invest because they always had excess money at the end of each month.

Let’s assume you may be one of those who are having real financial problems. You are praying constantly for God to meet your need. You realize that it doesn’t seem God is answering your prayers. Is God punishing you for not being a good steward by not answering your prayers or is He doing what may be best for you? Sometimes it takes a crisis in our lives before we change our behavior. Assume that God meets your needs and bails you out. How long might it be before you get back into the same financial mess?

We found out when credit was easy, people were borrowing on their homes to pay off their credit cards. Once their debts were paid off they began charging again just like before. Did they learn anything at all? They learned that they owed more on their homes than they are now worth.

Does anyone ever remember buying a new car on credit and having the Holy Spirit try to suggest you buy a used one? You ignored Him and went ahead and made the purchase. How many of us realize that this is exactly what Satan wants us to do? Are we at our best when we are stressed out because of debt?

What the world is going through right now might be the best thing that could have happened. Recent news says that Moody’s is warning that the Treasury’s AAA rating is in jeopardy. We are told there could be a possible run on our dollar and that we may be headed for hyperinflation. The rumor is that there will be a national sales tax coming soon. There is a possibility that they will raise the retirement age on Social Security. Most are aware of the financial condition of Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Italy. (PIG-IS)

When all of this is in place, hopefully Christians will realize the need for prayer. We are going the opposite direction our Christian founders had envisioned. We had better get our personal finances under control and ask God to help us focus on living according to His will.
